Omega 3 - Omega 3 vs Omega 6
Omega 3 - Omega 3 for a Healthy Brain
The potential benefits derived from having a daily intake of Omega 3 essential fatty acids have been accepted by the medical community at large and is by now given for granted. Many decades of research on the subject had shown its benefits for people with cardiovascular diseases, its anti-inflammatory qualities for rheumatoid arthritis, and its critical role in brain functioning, both for normal people and for brain-related disorders.
Until now Omega 3 was largely associated with cold water fish oil and with certain plant sources such nuts, flax seeds oil and olive oil. This data has now been shaken by a scientific breakthrough: the discovery of Clary Sage, or Salvia Sclarea, as a remarkable source of Omega 3, exceeding by far the benefits of both, fish oil and flax seed oil, with non of their detriments.
The main ways through which Omega-3 oil helps our brains’ function are:
1. It controls free radicals that can damage or destroy brain cells. 2. It reduces immune responses that can cause harmful inflammation. 3. It improves the function of the brain's neurotransmitters. 4. It increases blood flow to the brain.
How does Omega 3 improve communication between brain cells?
Fats make up to 60% of our brains, which insulates nerve cells to provide communication between cells. Without it, our brains would simply not work. Like protein makes our muscles and calcium our bones, fats make our brain. Approximately 8% of the brain’s weight is comprised of Omega-3 fatty acids3—the building block for an estimated 100 billion neurons.
Electrical signals travelling through the brain get passed from one brain cell, or neuron, to the next. In the changeover, a signal needs to leave one brain cell at a point called the synapse and cross a physical gap before entering the neighboring neuron. For signals to enter a neuron, they need to pass through the walls that surround them. These walls, known as cell membranes, consist almost entirely of fats. About 20% are essential fatty acids like Omega 3s. The more synapses the brain has, the better they function and the better the brain works. Without plenty Omega-3 fat, the brain can't build more synapses, dendrites or receptors, or even use the existing ones effectively.
Why is Omega 3 a brain booster?
Another function of Omega-3 fats is to boost the level of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter - a chemical messenger - that enables communication between brain cells. Low serotonin levels can lead to depression, suicidal tendencies and other mood disorders, while high levels of serotonin can be a mood booster. That's why serotonin is often called the "feel good" neurotransmitter. Omega-3 oils can also reduce inflammation in the blood vessels and cells of your brain. Several studies have found that inflammation can reduce brain function or even destroy brain tissue, which can lead to strokes or Alzheimer's disease. Studies have shown that diets rich in Omega-3 can result in increased learning ability, problem-solving skills, focus, memory, and communication between cells. Omega-3 has also been shown to help promote a positive mood and emotional balance, and can help people maintain healthy mental ability as they age.
How does Omega 3 affect moodiness and depression?
Omega-3 fatty acids are showing encouraging results in treating some patients with bipolar disorder (formerly known as manic-depression.) In one study, patients supplemented with 9,600 mg omega-3 fatty acids daily showed significantly longer periods of remission than did placebo recipients, and the treatment was well-tolerated.
